NZ man meets his guitar playing hero. A Hawke's Bay man on dialysis is full of life after meeting his hero - American guitar legend Joe Satriani. The people of Waikaremoana fundraised so local man Ling Paku could go to Taranaki to see Satriani in concert. And the meeting with Satriani, who has been nominated for 15 Grammy awards, breathed new life into Paku. "He's royalty in the guitar world - he's number one." Awwwww 7/21/08
Blues for a Friday. Plenty of electric blues players can bluster and roar through a performance, but a slow tune―even over a set of straight 12-bar changes―is the style's ultimate challenge. Tapping into the music's deepest pools of expression, where delicately squeezed, shaken, and slid notes become stand-ins for a range of human emotions, it takes an outstanding guitarist to sculpt a soulful slow blues. But the best recorded slow blues of the past 25 years may be Vaughan's 1984 rendition of 'Tin Pan Alley' on his second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather. Link Without You 7/19/08
Sonama Wire Works has released RiffWorks T4, a free version of its RiffWorks guitar recording software. This enables you not only to record songs on your own, but also to collaborate with other musicians from around the world. The software's collaborative features sound promising, too. Up to four musicians can work on a song simultaneously, while any tracks you record are automatically streamed to your co-creators and will play in sync with the drums. Songs can be saved on RiffWorld.com and then opened at a later date. RiffWorks T4 can be downloaded now from the Sonama Wire Works website. 7/19/08
Redwood timbers that once framed the backdrop to the West's last great train robbery 85 years ago near Ashland are getting a second life that happily has given Bruce Petros plenty to fret about.
One charred chunk of the large, old-growth redwood from Siskiyou Pass historic Tunnel 13 is in Petros' Wisconsin factory, where the veteran maker of acoustic guitars hopes the fine wood and tunnel's infamy will help him sell the high-end instruments. Read More

Guitarhero32Lazy ass, plastic guitar strumming, Guitar Hero posers will soon be able to play two of the guitar genius's most widely-loved songs: "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary" using a Jimi Hendrix character.
Although the Associated Press reports that no previous version of Guitar Hero has incorporated a likeness of Hendrix, the character Xavier Stone's Guitar Hero III persona (pictured to the right) appears to have been inspired by the deceased legend minus the Strat. The end is near.

61-year-old Ronnie Wood checked his old ass into the tank yesterday, weeks after he ran away with some 20-year-old Russian slut!
Ronnie's spokesbitch confirmed it, 'Following Ronnie's continued battle with alcohol he has entered a period of rehab.' Ronnie was reportedly drinking up to 2 bottles of vodka a day. Ronnie also wants to save his marriage of 23 years, but his wifey isn't having it. Jo Wood refuses to visit him and will only talk to his crater face once he sobers up.

While I'm sure the acoustics on the field of Yankee Stadium would challenge even the Steve Vais of our world, I have to wonder whose idea, exactly, it was to force Crow to drag her six-string onto the field last night; the end result wasn't so much "folk-rock patriot" than it was "is this thing on? I still have to tune up." Check out the video via idolator and redlazzo and God bless America. Oh yea and Chevy too. Linking Las Vegas 7/17/08
Fake Roth Allegedly Has Charles Manson Traits. Pretending to be David Lee Roth is child's play compared to David Kuntz's (the Canadian imposter) frightening past. See the Mr. Peanut story below.
Kuntz was involved in a 1989 murder trial that painted him as a manipulative master that talked one of his girlfriends into killing the other. This story is nuttier than the last one!

A story that circulated earlier this week -- fueled by actual interviews with two Canadian police officers -- claimed cops had to save David Lee Roth's life after he went into anaphylactic shock from eating nuts. 93 year old David "Honeyboy" Edwards received a gift at Blues Alley on Wednesday night in recognition of his contributions to the recent Grammy-wining album "Last of the Great Mississippi Bluesmen -- Live in Dallas." He took home a new Gibson Les Paul guitar, courtesy of the manufacturer. Edwards tends to stick to the basics, playing 12-bar progressions in standard tuning and often in the key of E. (He even plays bottleneck guitar in standard tuning.) But like many country bluesmen, he's developed a distinctive sound over the years. Many, many years you lil' whippersnapper. Radiohead, never ones to shy away from trying new things, has shot its new video for "House of Cards" without using cameras at all. Whaa? Yes, they've used two fancy new technologies called Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. To shoot it using lasers and stuff. The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers. Hmmm Strange. We'll post a copy as soon as it comes out. 7/11/08

It's been a source of much controversy among real musicians, but Activision's Guitar Hero game has certainly helped put the music of Aerosmith, Van Halen, Foo Fighters, Muse and Smashing Pumpkins in front of a new generation of gamers and wannabe rockers. A world-class guitarist is on tap Friday night at Arcadia Blues Club when Gary Hoey and his band perform. Hoey has 13 instrumental albums under his belt and is set to release a disc in August showcasing his vocal talents along with his amazing guitar playing.
The Boston native got a break some years back when metal giant Ozzy Osbourne traveled to Bean Town looking for a guitarist. After hearing Hoey' s tape, Osbourne flew him to LA for an audition.
Since then, he' s toured with Brian May (Queen), Ted Nugent, Foreigner, Joe Satriani, The Doobie Bros., Kenny Wayne Shepard, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Peter Frampton. Nice work if you can get it!
Besides his hard-rocking credentials, Hoey wrote the sound track for the surf movie 'Endless Summer II,' receiving high fives from surf-guitar king Dick Dale. This is a guitarist' s guitarist.

It is easy to see why Derek Trucks was sitting in with the Allman Bros. at 12 and then joining as a semi-regular tour member at age 14. I can definitely understand why Eric Clapton took him on tour in 2006 and 2007. He is, in one word, a prodigy. He makes playing guitar look so easy...nonchalantly finger-picking his way through purposeful slide guitar melodies and solos like it was his...um...job.

At first glance, KISS is a sad-looking bunch... a cadre of pudgy sixty year olds squeezed into leather body suits, wheezing and panting. One has a star painted on his face, while another has made himself up to look like a sad kitty cat. But any doubts that KISS stands for Knights in Satan's Service immediately evaporates when Gene Simmons opens his jaw and unfurls the slavering, gelatinous musculature of his wildly flailing tongue. This is the salivating organ of Baphomet, grafted into a human mouth. This is Satanism. This... is... ROCK!
KISS fans can now own a decapitated replica of Gene Simmons head, as well as his purplish, pulsating tongue. The Gene Simmons LED bust features an 8" long fiber-optic glass tongue that will hallucinogenically flash in time with Detroit Rock City. Not only an excellent piece of tasteful decor for any post-modernist luxury apartment, but an excellent way to practice your french kissing. Just remember to tightly constrict your esophagus.
