After much speculation
and a sneak preview at Summer NAMM 2008, Ibanez has
confirmed details of its JS 'Black Dog' Tribute, a faithful
recreation of Joe Satriani's iconic late 1980s/early 1990s
six-string.
The first thing to catch your eye will surely be that
finish, which Ibanez has entrusted just one artist to
painstakingly recreate for the 100 pieces that will be
available worldwide.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Satriani's original
guitar had been the victim of an assault by a magic
marker-toting five year old. However, Ibanez describes the
predominantly silver and purple graphics as "the drawings
that Joe would apply to the original Black Dog body as the
spirit moved him". The list price of the JS Black Dog
Tribute is $7999 ouch

Former Soundgarden and
Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has set October 14 as the
release date for his third solo album, titled "Scream". The
set was produced by pop and urban mastermind Timbaland, a
choice that has proven controversial among fans of Cornell's
earlier heavy rock projects. But the singer told
The Pulse of Radio that he was always in control of his own
record. "A lot of people were concerned
about, like, am I gonna do what, for example, Timbaland
tells me to do, if he wants to tell me to do something, that
kind of thing," he said. "We didn't really have that
relationship, it wasn't that type of a process. It was more,
he would bring in a beat, an idea, I would write to it and
sing it, and we would move on kind of to the next thing."

Guitar Center presents
an Evening with Slash
Guitar Center has announced the next installment of Guitar
Center Sessions: An Evening of Dialogue and
Insight
with Slash. Taking place Wednesday, September 3 at the
Guitar Center in Northridge, CA, the evening is free and
open to the public, and will include a book signing for 2008
Pop-Culture Book of the Year Reckless Road: Guns N' Roses
and the Making of Appetite for Destruction (Real Deal
Media), the definitive visual history of the band’s early
days in Hollywood. The evening will be powered by Gibson,
Ernie Ball and Real Deal Media.
Slash is more than just a musician. He is an icon. From Guns
n’ Roses to Velvet Revolver, Slash has changed the rock
landscape with his rough and ready riffs and unforgettable,
soulful leads, becoming one of the most recognizable
guitarists in the world along the way. His catalog spans
several decades and boasts some of rock’s greatest anthems.

It all came about
easily enough. Several D-backs are guitar buffs who’ve
visited Fender headquarters and who often like to unwind at
Chase Field and on the road by exchanging bat and glove for
a Stratocaster® and an amp. Fender, composed as it is of
many baseball fans, accordingly sent a dugout load of gear
down to Chase Field in spring 2008—a couple Stratocaster
guitars, some acoustic guitars, a Jazz Bass® guitar, amps
for all of them and even a drum set, and the team’s resident
rockers converted a seldom-used storage room into a private
music studio soon rechristened the Fender Player’s Lounge.

Ed Robertson is the
frontman of Barenaked Ladies (not the one just busted for
drugs), which means he is at least partly responsible for
that
"One Week" song that ruined the entire year of 1998. That
doesn't explain why he seems to be one of God's chosen
children; Robertson's private plane crashed in Canada
yesterday afternoon and all four passengers managed to walk

kind with pontoons.

Rickenbacker
International has a problem that General Motors would love
to have. The company that
made
the first electric guitar and whose instruments were
popularized by the Beatles in the 1960s can't make them fast
enough.
``We're back-ordered two years,'' company owner John Hall
said. So he raised prices on all 6- and 12-string guitars
and basses by as much as 20 percent this year to cool
demand. ``It hasn't completely done that,'' he admitted.
The 77-year-old company that made the chiming guitars played
on folk-rock hits such as the Byrds' ``Turn! Turn! Turn!''
is a music industry anomaly: a debt-free, family-owned brand
that makes everything at one small factory in Santa Ana,
California, 38 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
The Beatles had Rickenbacker guitars and Rickenbacker
guitars had the Beatles. 8/22/08

Johnson, said to have have sold his soul to the devil in

acoustic guitar on his only two recording sessions.
The Texas sessions in 1936 and 1937 produced 29 songs that
were a huge influenced on future stars such as Eric Clapton,
Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan â?" and led
Johnson to be dubbed the father of rock 'n' roll. The
current owner only realized he had Johnson's guitar when a
boxed set of the singer's work was re-released in 1990
complete with a picture of him playing the battered
instrument. 8/20/08
Anchorage Capital Partners recently reported to the
Financial Times that it is preparing to launch a closed-end
fund which will invest in the rare and vintage guitar
market. "The vintage guitar market, like some of the other
exotic
investment strategies such as art and wine funds can be
enjoyed while holding
them, but where this market differs significantly is in how
the guitars
improve every time you play them. The vibrations on the wood
improve the
sound of the guitars, so the more they're played the better
they sound. The
younger generation knows this and has an increasing appetite
for acquiring
their favorite models. After all, that Monet hanging on the
wall doesn't
improve every time someone looks at it." Madonna
souvenirs (bras) and vintage guitars are the latest
alternative assets to attract interest from structured
investment funds.

Have a favorite guitar
that you wish you had two of? Right now on eBay you can pick
up a "guitar photocopier," a contraption that can carve a
new guitar body for you that's exactly like another guitar. Essentially,
you put your guitar down underneath it with a block of wood
next to it that will turn into your new guitar. The
duplicator then traces the contours of your guitar, using
those measurements to carve up the block of wood so it's
exactly like what you currently have.
Of course, you can use this to duplicate any number of
things other than guitars as long as they fit and are made
of wood. Wooden pants! Wooden sandwiches! Small pieces of
wood! Let your imagination run wild! It's currently at
$1,185 with no bids. [eBay

More music trouble for
the McCain campaign: Jackson Browne sues John McCain over
song use.
Jackson Browne is suing John McCain for using the song
"Running on Empty" in a campaign ad -- and the
veteran rocker is also calling the candidate a great
pretender when it comes to standing up for constitutional
rights.
Browne, one of rock music's most famous activists for
liberal causes, is "incensed" that the presumptive
Republican candidate for president has been using Browne's
signature 1977 song "Running on Empty" in campaign
commercials, according to the singer-songwriter's attorney.
Browne filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against both
McCain and the Republican National Committee on Thursday in
U.S. District
Court in Los Angeles seeking a permanent injunction
prohibiting the use of the forlorn arena anthem or any other
Browne compositions, as well as damages.
It's not the first time:
"They used a John Mellencamp song until he made them stop
and he used an ABBA song and a Frankie Valli song -- it's
ridiculous and it's setting a terrible example," Iser said.
"It's shocking that they don't even attempt to get
permission. There's no copyright difference between using a
song to sell cars or by people running for president." Hey,
he's got a
new album coming out too -- the first in six years.

slow, methodical but determined sound that's deep and
booming. It's also a project of the brothers three: Van
(guitar, lead vocals), Lain (drums, vocals), and Jennings
Carney (bass, organ, vocals). They hail from Brooklyn by way
of Virginia. If you like Fu Manchu like I do. Give 'em a
listen.

IRON MAIDEN star ADRIAN
SMITH has become the latest rock victim of theft after his
brand new Jackson
guitar
was stolen after the British group's Athens, Greece gig on
Saturday night (Aug 2nd 08).
The guitarist is confident the instrument will be found
quickly - because it's a one-of-a-kind, made specifically
for him.
Iron Maiden are offering a tour jacket and a handwritten
thank you note from Smith for information that leads to the
recovery of his guitar. Yea, that should get it back.

instruments.

While teen idol Miley
Cyrus was grabbing all the attention on the U.S. pop chart
this week with her third No. 1 album in two years,
72-year-old blues guitarist Buddy Guy also had cause for
celebration.
His new album, “Skin Deep,” opened at No. 68, his highest
position to date on the Billboard 200. His previous best was
the No. 136 peak for his first chart entry, 1991’s “Damn
Right, I’ve Got the Blues.”
Guy started recording in 1957, but his early career was
stymied by under appreciative executives at his Chess
Records label. He enjoyed a renaissance in the 1980s, and
“Damn Right” became the first of eight albums to reach the
pop chart. “Skin
Deep,” released on Silvertone Records, hit the chart, a day
after Tuesday’s DVD release of the Rolling Stones’ concert
movie “Shine a Light,” which features a guest turn by Guy on
the tune “Champagne and Reefer.”

Jimmy Page's Gibson
EDS-1275 double neck has been named the 'coolest guitar in
rock' in a new rundown
on
Gigwise.com
The EDS-1275, pictured below, famously allowed Jimmy Page to
perform Stairway To Heaven live without the need for a
clumsy mid-song guitar change.
Page also used the weighty instrument live for renditions of
other Led Zeppelin classics such as The Rain Song, Gallows
Pole and The Song Remains The Same.

Queen's guitarist Brian
May has written something that makes even less sense than
his group's songs: his
astrophysics
doctoral thesis. Yes he is, in fact an astrophysics egghead.
The guitarist just published something called "A Survey of
Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud,"
which won him a Ph.D.
from Imperial College in London.
According to Live Science, May's thesis examines the
mysterious phenomenon of Zodiacal light, a cone of light
that appears in the western sky after sunset and in the
eastern sky before sunrise.
This, from the force behind "Fat Bottomed Girls." But good
for him! 8/4/08

Sheryl Crow Jeans...did
you ever think that would be a clothing line you'd one day
utter? Well, if not - go
ahead
and utter, because Sheryl Crow has launched her own Jeans
line!
Sheryl Crow, who thinks we should all use one square of
toilet paper to save the earth, has launched her own Jeans
Line with Bootheel Trading Company. “I want to be able to
provide a cool look for anybody, but particularly for those
gals out there that have a fashion sense and want to feel
good but can’t afford to buy the really high-end stuff.”

This time, it's Kevin
Costner who's coming to Atlantic City for a musical
performance. Which begs the
question:
Do we really need to see another actor living out his
rock-star fantasies? (Paging Bruce Willis. Paging Jim
Belushi. Paging Keanu Reeves.) Fact is, he was making music
decades before he became a box-office titan. A classically
trained pianist who caught the music bug attending church as
a youngster, Costner, whose latest flick, the political
comedy "Swing Vote," opens today, put music aside once he
decided to pursue an acting career.

Motley Crue backing
wannabe rockers. The band has announced a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for an
unknown
band to become the opening act on their 2009 tour.
The American metal act revealed details of the competition
at a special press conference held outside Hollywood's
famous Guitar Centre.
Wannabes are being invited to submit their music at
www.makerockhistory.com for the chance to play
alongside the legendary rock act. Seriously is Mick Mars
still alive or are the just propping up his rotting corpse?
Check his photo in the new Guitar Player Mag. YIKES!

CANDLEMASS guitarist
Mats "Mappe" Björkman is selling the white "Candlemass
skull" Gibson Les Paul Junior
guitar
that he used on the band's Grammis award-winning (Swedish
Grammy equivalent) comeback album in 2005. The axe, which
was also used at a number of live shows that year, comes
with a
Seymour Duncan Invader pickup plus the original one. The
buyer will also get a signed photo with Mappe and the
guitar. The guitar will be auctioned via eBay beginning on
July 31. 7/31/08
What a Nielsen
Kill-O-Watt Amp Will Let You Do A
Nielsen Kill-O-Watt Amp has tone for days. With it, you will
spread unrest, outrage and consternation in a solid swath
cutting across all artificial boundaries of class and taste.
Spacetime will be twisted so tightly that a Musical Event
Horizon will appear and at its periphery, the self-energy of
the Funk Field will abstract billions and billions of
groove-antigroove particle pairs from out of the roiling
quantum foam; the antigroove particles to disappear
immediately into the Black Hole, and the groove particles to
escape at near-relativistic speeds in all directions. Ok
just say he makes cool amps and guitars out of
old suitcases and assorted junk. 7/31/08
12-Year-Old Guitar
Sensation JACK RIPPER does just that RIPS. Jack started
playing guitar at the age of 7. He always loved music. He
first was influenced by listening to Alice Cooper, who is
still his favorite singer and band. After taking lessons for
about a year and a half, Jack started making great progress.
Check out the video of him playing the National Anthem.

Resurrecting the Dead.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra channels Jerry Garcia and
company with the
world
premiere of Dead Symphony No. 6. But even Garcia, a man who
mined old blues and country for his psychedelic wanderings,
might have had trouble seeing this coming. Tomorrow night at
the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, on what would have been
Garcia's 66th birthday, tie-dye meets tie and tails as the
BSO performs the world premiere of a work known as Dead
Symphony No. 6.

This one makes
yesterday's bass look cheap! The $250,000 bass guitar, the
Flora Aurum, was built by Jens
Ritter,
a luthier from Germany. His line of custom-designed Ritter
Royals is being sold by Wynn & Co. Jewelry in the esplanade
at Wynn Las Vegas. Ritter makes about 60 handcrafted guitars
each year. His clients include Phil Lesh of the Grateful
Dead.

Bill Wyman Vox Teardrop
VBW-2000 - iconic 1960s bass guitar reissued in extremely
limited numbers. After 40 years, the bass created
specifically for Bill Wyman by Vox has been reissued in very
limited numbers. The
Vox Teardrop VBW-2000 has been recreated in almost every
detail, with the same styling and the same unique parts.
That means a semi acoustic body, a craved maple top with
three-colour sunburst and a back and sides made from a
natural finished mahogany.
There's also a short 30.5-inch length, a very slim neck, a
custom bridge with chrome cover, chrome knobs and scratch
plate and to fit that custom spec, a fitted hard case. Only
six will be available in the UK (and not many more
elsewhere), with a price of £1,599 or whatever that is in
real money. 7/29/08
If Scott Weiland's
split with rock supergroup Velvet Revolver this year was a
disappointment to some, it
was
great news for Stone Temple Pilots fans. After seeing
Revolver last year I have to say that Saturday nights
concert did not disappoint even without Slash. Really great
sound and Dean DeLeo's Les Paul collection was a wonder to
behold. photo

A guitar made of
thousands of pieces of Guelph, Canada made its debut at the
Hillside Festival
yesterday.
"The instrument is made entirely of pieces of the university
and city's history," creator Doug Larson said. "It's
extremely local."
The guitar contains
around 3,200 artifacts. Each individual piece has a story,
the environmental biologist said. He got a piece of aluminum
worth more than platinum from a Guelph physicist and 28 mink
penile bones from a vertebrate biologist. That's right,
penis bones.

The Tone God TubeUlent Amp/Preamp.
Imagine an amp that's closer to pedal-size than a full-size
amp, but
is actually a genuine tube amp with tones ranging from meaty
growls to sparkling clarity. Designed to be controlled like
a preamp, it would allow you to plug into anything. Now
throw in a head-turning, rugged design with LEDs and visible
tubes -- you've got a portable tone monster that every
guitarist in the room will be asking you about during the
break.
